Alright, let’s talk about Cellulite.

CELLULITE: WHAT IS IT

I have it, thighs and abs and especially when I am in certain changing rooms, the overhead lighting shines a bright light on it. And I am not alone as about 90% of the female population worldwide has it too. And guess what? If Barbie were real, there’s every chance she would have it as well.

Simply put cellulite is the result of fat pushing against your skin while connective tissue pulls it down. This causes the dimpled, lumpy appearance, similar to an orange peel or cottage cheese.

We need to normalize this and stop feeling pressure to look like a body that, quite frankly, does not exist. Our bodies naturally have dimples, curves, wrinkles, lumps, and bumps, and that is what makes us unique. The key is to love our bodies for what they do and to take care of our health.

And guess what your body actually needs body fat and the reason being fats and lipids play critical roles in the overall functioning of the body, such as in digestion and energy metabolism. Fat is the body’s energy provider and energy reserve, which helps the body maintain a constant temperature.

Cellulite is more visible in women than in men due to differences in skin structure, fat distribution, and hormones. Women’s connective tissue, which consists of fibrous bands under the skin, is arranged in a vertical, column-like pattern. This structure allows fat to push through more easily. In contrast, men’s connective tissue is organized in a crisscross or mesh pattern, making it more difficult for fat to bulge through.

Fat Distribution and Body Composition

Women naturally have a higher percentage of body fat, particularly in the thighs, hips, and buttocks—areas where cellulite is commonly visible. In contrast, men tend to store fat differently, primarily in the abdominal region, and their thicker skin makes cellulite less noticeable.

Oestrogen promotes fat storage in women and can weaken connective tissues over time, making cellulite more prominent. On the other hand, men have higher levels of testosterone, which contributes to thicker skin and a different pattern of fat distribution.

Now that we understand what cellulite is and acknowledge that it’s completely normal, let’s discuss ways to address it. First and foremost, no body lotion you rub on your skin will make cellulite disappear, no matter what it claims. Such products will only take your money. Instead of trying to eliminate cellulite, here are some suggestions to boost your skin and body so you can glow and feel your best.

2. Boosts Blood Circulation & Lymphatic Drainage. Exfoliation, especially through techniques like dry brushing or scrubs, stimulates blood flow, which can help reduce fluid buildup and improve the appearance of cellulite.

3. Exercise is one of the best ways to help reduce the visibility of cellulite. It helps burn fat, build muscle, and improve circulation, making the skin smoother and firmer. 4. Eating a healthy diet can also help reduce the appearance of cellulite by lowering body fat, improving skin health, and boosting circulation. While no single food can completely eliminate cellulite, maintaining a balanced diet can make it less visible over time.

The most important tip to remember is that cellulite is normal. Be kind to your body, and recognize that perfection does not exist. Chasing an unrealistic ideal can prevent you from enjoying life’s joys. For too long, the media has glorified supermodels and unrealistic body standards, creating pressure to conform. It’s time to wake up and realize that what makes us beautiful is our unique individuality and who we are as people—not just our outward appearance.

And as I always say, focus on a healthy lifestyle for your overall well-being. Remember, no miracle cream can make it go away. The next time you are in the supermarket, on a train, on a plane, or anywhere else, take a look around and think that most of the people there will have cellulite.

So regardless of age or fitness level, there are probably 7 billion people in the world right now with cellulite, even the fittest athletes. So, be kind to yourself and remember cellulite is normal.
